History
The North Kamloops Curling Club started curling in September or October 1965 just after the sports complex was completed. The curling club consisted of Men’s, Ladies and Mixed curling leagues. The club boasted six sheets of curling ice with three tiered bleachers in the reception area/lower lounge, space for tables, bulletin boards men’s and ladies washrooms/locker rooms. There was a concession area that serviced the curling club and ice arena.
This was a City of Kamloops facility.
We also had access to a lounge and bar overlooking the curling ice which the club ran with volunteers.
In 1987 the senior’s league was established much to the enjoyment of our older curlers.
In the late 1980’s the club decided to hire a club manager to operate the bar and hire whatever staff was required to run the bar and host bonspiels, this took a load off our club volunteers and executive.
In 2002 the club was renamed the McArthur Island Curling Club.
In Mach 2005 the City of Kamloops decided to revamp the sports complex and tore down the area separating the ice rink from the curling club. They have built a new area and added a second Olympic size hockey rink side by side with the old rink. They added new ice plants including a separate plant for the curling club. The city is still in the process of completing the lower and upper lounge areas.
The executive of the McArthur Island Curling Club decided in September 2006 to hire their own ice maker. This has been working out very well this year and we hope it will carry on.
In the 2006-2007 year we have Men’s leagues on Monday and Thursday nights, a Ladies league on Tuesday nights, Super League on Wednesday nights and a Mixed Curling league on Friday nights. We have senior curling Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Senior Super league on Wednesday morning and a Ladies Brunch Bunch on Wednesday mid morning.
We host a men’s bonspiels in November call the Grey Cup, a mixed bonspiels in late January early February called the Groundhog and a Ladies Open in Mid February.
We are open to arranging fun spiels, company spiels or just fun curling for groups of people.
